Terms and conditions of Quarantine leave


According to Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.-1




When a contagious disease occurs in the family or household of a teacher/ employee of a school. So that no one else in the school is infected with that contagious disease by that teacher, then that teacher has to take "Quarantine leave".


"Quarantine leave" is granted due to which infectious diseases?




  • Scarlet fever 

  •  Plague (Bueekmonic bubonic), 

  • Typhus

  • Cerebro-Spinal meningitis


  • Small-pox may be deliberated as contagious disease, chicken-pox shall not, however, be calculated as infections disease if not the M.O. or Public Health Officer considers that because of suspicion as to the true nature of the disease e.g. small-pox, There are reasons for giving such leave.


  • For persons employed in the readiness and parcelling of food the following surplus diseases shall also be treated as contagious

  1. Dysentery

  2. Enteric fever 

  3. Typhoid fever

  4.  Malta fever

  5. Paratyphoid fever.


What is the main condition for granting "Quarantine leave"?

To grant quarantine leave, a certificate from a registered doctor or public health office must be submitted.


How long is the "Quarantine leave" granted?

The duration of "Quarantine leave" is not more than 21 days.  However, in exceptional circumstances, the maximum period of "Quarantine leave" will be 30 days.


In this case, if the leave is more than 30 days, it is adjusted from the other leave of the teacher.

A Teacher or an employee on Quarantine leave shall be treated as an duty and no alternative shall be engaged while he is on such leave.


If a teacher / an employee is infected with a contagious disease, will he get "Quarantine leave"?

If a teacher / an employee himself is infected with a contagious disease, he will not get "Quarantine leave", then he can take "Medical Leave" or any other accumulated leave.


Can "Quarantine leave" be obtained due to coronavirus infection?

The Corona virus is not on the list of infectious diseases that cause quarantine leave. Since Covid-19 is the current infectious disease, if the rule and regulation of "Quarantine leave" is modified, then the corona virus may be listed here.

The Finance Department has published a Memorandum on Quarantine Leave on 19/11/2020. With the help of this Memorandum, "Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.-1" has been modified. I posted the Memorandum below...


Quarantine leave in west bengal

In Word:

Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.-1, provides for the grant of Quarantine Leave to a 

government employee when he/she or any member of his/her family is affected by such infectious disease as specified thereunder as his/her attendance at office/place of duty is considered hazardous to other government employees.With the passage of time, outbreak of some other diseases in the country had been considered to be infectious of which COVID-19 has been declared Pandemic by WHO this 

year. In view of this, inclusion of other infectious diseases including COVID-19 under the provision of Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.- I, was under active consideration of the Government. 

Now, after careful consideration and taking the valued opinion of Health & Family Welfare Department of this Government, the undersigned is directed to include the following five diseases in the list of infectious disease under Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.-I, in 

addition to the existing diseases as specified therein : 

1. SARS 

2. MARS 

3. COVID-19 

4. Avian Influenza (H5N1) / Novel Influenza 

5. Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) 

Rule 198 of WBSR, Pt.- I stands modified to such extent. All other norms related to sanction of Quarantine Leave will continue to be the same as laid down under the said rule. 

Amendment of the rule to that extent will be made in due course. 

This will be deemed to have taken effect from the 12th day of March, 2020.
